Young riders to watch in 2023 continental teams - Part 3 of 3

Start of the 2023 is getting sooner with any day, so it is time for final part of my ,,Young riders to watch in 2023 continental teams '' list. In case you have missed parts one and two, I recommend you to start with them before continuing reading.

5. Artem Schmidt  

Another follower of trend of great young American riders from past couple of years. Great time-trialist capable in hilly terrain might flourish into classics specialist or even target general classification of some races. Coming back from his European spell with Cannibal team, he will join line-up of well know Hagens Berman Axeon.

4. Romet Pajur

One more proof that cycling has future in Baltics. Estonian sprinter can target stage victories and points jerseys, but in junior category he managed to be succesful in various types of classics aswell. I remember him from Course de la Paix juniors this year, where he did not struggled much when stages were really exhausting. His new team, Lotto-Kern Haus, started kind of cooperation with Bora, however as far as i've been informed they are not their directly linked development team, so their riders should normally stay in continental category.

3. Antonio Morgado

Possibly one of favourite youngsters on cycling twitter. His active style of racing and domination in domestic Portuguese events brought him couple of supporters. Rider so universal that I hesitate with putting him into any category. If his development continues well, he might be another of super universal riders. For now I believe his focus in Hagens Berman Axeon should be on stage races.

2. Mathieu Kockelmann

Fast rider from Luxembourg with some fresh cyclocross experience and high profile time-trialist. All of that combined with his improved stamina in last season suggests he might have great future. In races like Course de la Paix he proved ability to stay with the strongest group when it matters. He will join ranks of Lotto-Kern Haus aswell, suggesting this team is really going all out with U-23 development.

1. Emil Herzog

As a junior world champion (adding up to his German national title), he is natural number one of the list. He will meet his often rival Morgado in Hagens Berman Axeon squad. Surely one of most talented climbers from upcoming generation and should therefore focus races with mountainous terrain. Only time will show, how much he can still improve, but as for now it seems he has very bright future.

Elkov Kasper 2022 season review

      Before I will move to different topics on my blog, I need to review 2022 season of the team, which became established powerhouse on European conti scene over years - Elkov Kasper .     Elkov had to face plenty of challenges, when it comes to roster for this season. Alois Kaňkovský, one of best continental sprinters in recent years, ended his career in 2021. Team lost two more established leaders as Michal Schlegel joined Caja Rural and Michael Kukrle moved to Gazprom-Rusvelo. Remaining departure was Petr Kelemen, who joined ranks of Tudor Pro Cycling Team. Most valuable reinforcement was definitely Daniel Babor, who came with promise of doing well in mass finishes. Michael Boroš joined team to gain some good kilometres, mostly to prepare for CX season. ATT Investments 2022 season review

    Since establishment of ATT Investments team, their goal is development of talented youth cyclists. It was proclaimed, that squad is being built according to ,,1+1 model'', meaning there is always one experienced rider teaming up with each young rookie. Riders from 18 to 26 years of age were represented in team during season.     Let's step aside from official targets for now. Main goal of each sports team should naturally be to generate good results. ATT achieved that, having their best season ever in terms of UCI points, aswell as  celebrating some UCI wins again. Performance of whole team was usually converted into success by three key men: Mika Heming (22 years old), Matúš Štoček (23) and Tomáš Bárta (23).       Heming made move, which might have seemed odd to some before this season. HRE Mazowsze Serce Polski 2022 season review

     Before I will dive into race performances of HRE Mazowsze serce Polski, I need to remind one of their activities away from sport. Team took break from racing in march to participate in help for people of Ukraine, who were fleeing away from war. That alone means that the team was one of the most succesful cycling teams around world for me, since they had proven their ,,sportsmanship'' even above sport, which is something many teams forget about. Cycling is not everything.     Mazowsze squad consisted from mix of their last year riders (including some great leaders) and young prospects, who were generally gaining their first experience with continental cycling. Team had to face departure of Mihkel Räim, who provided 4 UCI wins in last season.
